Garden Trails

The 2010 Garden Discovery is being held over two days, March 19 and 20. Self-drive trails will lead visitors to around 30 beautiful private gardens in coastal, country and city locations.  Each garden has that something special, showcasing stunning subtropicals, which are at their best in March. The Whangarei district has a warm and humid climate making it a paradise for subtropical plants and lush growth.

Twenty gardens are included in Garden Discovery for the first time. The hard-working and enthusiastic gardeners will welcome visitors at their gardens, which range from a tiny unit garden to 4 ha of country splendour, including water features, massive rocks, sculptures, mass plantings – everything from bromeliads to roses, native trees and palms. In keeping with the current trend and huge interest now in vegetable growing, we have highlighted the gardens which also grow wonderful vegetables.

Refreshments will be available and plants for sale at some of the gardens.

There are gardens are in:

  • Maunu, Maungatapere and Poroti areas.
  • Kensington, Kamo and Kauri.
  • Onerahi and Parua Bay.

Adult two-day ticket $20 - gives access to the gardens on either or both days
