At any time, Whangarei’s spectacular gardens in Russell Road are a “must see” for everyone with an interest in gardens and especially unusual plants. This subtropical paradise, in the special micro climate of this disused quarry, is a community project created by volunteers over the past 10 years. However, during the three days of this sculpture exhibition, the gardens take on an even more exotic air.
Around 100 art works by local artists will be seen nestling amongst fantastic foliage, in the stream or lake, silhouetted against sheer cliffs and cascades, set against or on boulders, balanced on high banks and decorating the wedding lawn. Whangarei has the country’s largest number of artists per head of population, so the District abounds in sculptors working in all types of media.
It is organised by the Whangarei Garden Discovery committee, with Desiree Hirner again being the curator.
The 32 artists selected for this year’s event are thrilled with this wonderful setting for their work. They include Jin Ling, Bruce Young, Claire Nicholls, Jan Lorraine, Malcolm Ford, Trish Clarke, Aaron Hoskins, Julia Alabaster and Northland’s potters group “The Firebirds”.
All the works of art are for sale and funds raised by this event will benefit the on-going project of maintaining and developing the Gardens.
Refreshments will be available on site.
